The Most Common Pest Issues During the Winter Months — and How to Prevent Them

When the temperatures drop, many pests start looking for warmth and shelter — and your home can become the perfect hiding spot. Winter might feel like a break from bugs and critters, but in reality, it’s one of the most active seasons for indoor pest problems. Here are some of the most common pests we see during the colder months and how you can protect your home.
1. Rodents (Mice and Rats)
Rodents are the most common winter invaders. As soon as the weather turns cold, mice and rats search for warmth, food, and nesting spots. They can squeeze through openings as small as a dime and quickly multiply once inside.
Signs of an infestation:
Droppings along baseboards or in cabinets
Scratching or scurrying sounds in walls or ceilings
Gnaw marks on food packaging or wiring
Prevention tips:
Seal cracks and gaps around doors, windows, and foundation
Store food in airtight containers
Keep garages and basements clean and clutter-free
2. Spiders
While most spiders go dormant or die off in winter, some species move indoors to escape the cold. They’re often found in basements, garages, and attics where they can spin webs undisturbed.
Prevention tips:
Vacuum corners, window sills, and storage areas regularly
Keep outdoor lighting to a minimum (it attracts other insects, which attract spiders)
Seal gaps around windows and entry points
3. Cockroaches
Cockroaches are hardy pests that thrive indoors year-round. During winter, they often migrate to kitchens, bathrooms, and basements where warmth and moisture are plentiful.
Prevention tips:
Clean up crumbs, spills, and grease immediately
Fix leaky pipes and eliminate moisture sources
Take out trash regularly and keep it sealed
4. Overwintering Insects (Boxelder Bugs, Stink Bugs, and Lady Beetles)
These insects seek refuge inside walls, attics, and window frames when temperatures drop. While they’re not harmful, they can be a major nuisance once they start showing up inside on warmer days.
Prevention tips:
Caulk around windows and siding before the first freeze
Check screens and vents for holes
Vacuum up any visible bugs — don’t crush them (especially stink bugs!)
5. Ants
Ant activity slows in the winter, but colonies often relocate indoors to stay warm. Kitchens and bathrooms are their favorite targets since food and moisture are easy to find.
Prevention tips:
Wipe down counters and store food properly
Repair leaky faucets and pipes
Eliminate any standing water
